Am I qualified to be an Art Docent? Yes. You do not need to be an artist or need to have a background in art. Being a docent is fun and exciting. All you need is the willingness to have fun, discuss artwork, and provide instructions and materials for kids to create their own masterpieces. All the information and materials are provided.
What are Art Docent's Responsibilities? 1. All volunteers must be cleared to work in the classroom. A packet of information can be picked up at the front office. All volunteers must complete the following.
Background check/ live scan finger print clearance
TB test (good for 4 years)
Confidentiality Agreement
All visitors/volunteers are required to sign in at the main office
2. Coordinate dates to facilitate sessions with your teacher and other docents, if applicable, within your class (usually by email). 4. After you have determined a date and time, indicate your lesson on the Art Docent on-line scheduling program called Team Up. The reservation calendar can be found on the Twin Oaks ArtDocentProgram™ web site by clicking on the calendar link. When scheduling make sure to add your name, class name, date, and time to the Team Up master calendar.
5. Facilitate the session in the classroom. The time commitment is generally 2 hours a month with 30 minutes of content/home preparation and 1.5 hours in the classroom. The classroom schedule is determined based on a mutually beneficial time for the teacher and docent(s).
6. Create paper portfolio bags for students to keep their masterpieces in. The students will receive these bags at the end of the year. Please see YouTube video below for instructions on creating the bags. Please note that the video demonstrates stapling the edges and we typically tape the edges.
7. Assist with the Art Show at Open House in May. The only funding for the program's supplies are during our Art Show fundraiser. Docents prepare students masterpieces for display during the Art Show by gluing kids art work to 12x19 pieces of black paper and label the art work with the child's name, teacher name, and grade level. Docents are also required to either help set up or tear down the Art Show.
What is the time Commitment? The time commitment is generally 2 hours a month. The two hours break down to 30 minutes of content/home preparation and 1.5 hours in the classroom. The classroom schedule is determined based on a mutually beneficial time for the teacher and docent.
